ABSTRACT:
Introduction: Surgery is defined as “the branch of medicine dealing with manual and operative procedures for correction of deformities and defects, repair of injuries, and diagnosis and cure of certain diseases”. Design: A quantitative research approach using one group pretest posttest research design. Participants: 60 relatives of patient who undergoing abdominal surgery using Non-Probability Convenient sampling technique in hospital of Mehsana city. Tool: Self- Structured Knowledge Questionnaire. Results: The pretest knowledge scores respondents mean was 9.96, with standard deviation 3.65 and score range was 4-18. The posttest knowledge scores respondents mean was 13.86, median was 14, mode was 13 with standard deviation 2.77 and score range was 8-19. The statistical paired ‘t’ implies that the difference in the pretest and post-test value was found statistically significant at 5% level (P<0.05) with a paired ‘t’ value of 15.59. the computed Chi-square value for association between level of knowledge of relatives of patient’s regarding postoperative management and their selected demographic variables is found to be statistically significant at 0.05 levels for area of residence and is not found statistically significant for other socio demographic variables. Therefore, the findings partially support the hypothesis H2, inferring that relatives of patient’s level of knowledge regarding postoperative management is significantly associated only with residential area. Conclusion: The finding of the study revealed that structured teaching programme help in improving knowledge of regarding postoperative management among relatives of patient undergoing abdominal surgeries.

INTRODUCTION:
Body and soul cannot be separated for purpose of treatment, for they are one and indivisible. Sick mind must be healed as well as sick bodies.

The modern health care delivery system is changed and reconstructed, which gives more importance and interest for quality outcomes of patients with the help of most cost-effective methods. The health care team must provide collaborative efforts of physicians, nurses, and other health personnel for achieving the optimum outcomes for patients undergoing surgery. Now a days in every health care setting pre-operative education acts as a standard protocol of nursing practice which is very challenging for nurses to provide the most relevant information about surgery and anticipated changes to face in post-operative period in a stipulated time period.1
There are several ways of providing the knowledge to the patients to help them lessen their anxiety and recover from their operative state. It is believed that giving them the integrated knowledge, such as; the steps of the possible conditions occurring before and after the operation, the post- operation feelings and an individual’s practices before and after the operation, is better than giving them only single or one particular item of knowledge.2
Providing the knowledge to the patients should be made in a program consisting of what they need to know, and what they can practice until it becomes beneficial for their self- improvement. Giving the knowledge step by step and with the distinct guidelines can bring about the extremely effective results. When a patient admitted in hospital for surgery she or he must have anxiety. Anxiety can be defined as an emotional reaction towards a perceived threat or danger. Hospitalization is also a new stress full event for all the patients. But specially hospitalization for surgery is highly responsible for increased anxiety as it is related to post-operative pain, loss of body parts, dependency, having an anesthetic and an alteration in body image.3
“A Study To Assess The Effectiveness of Structured Teaching Programme on Knowledge Regarding Postoperative Management Among Relatives of Patients Undergoing Abdominal Surgeries at selected hospitals of Mehsana city.”
1. To assess the knowledge regarding postoperative management among relatives of patients undergoing abdominal surgeries at selected hospital in Mehsana city.
2. To determine the effectiveness of structured teaching programme on knowledge regarding postoperative management among relatives of patients undergoing abdominal surgeries at selected hospital in Mehsana city.
3. To the association between findings with the selected demographic variables on knowledge regarding postoperative management among relatives of patients undergoing abdominal surgeries at selected hospital in Mehsana city.
H0 There will be no significant difference between the pre-test and post-test knowledge score regarding postoperative management among relatives of patient undergoing abdominal surgery in selected hospital in Mehsana at 0.05 level of significance.
H1 There will be a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test knowledge score regarding postoperative management among relatives of patient undergoing abdominal surgery in selected hospital in Mehsana at 0.05 level of significance.
A quantitative research approach was adopted for this study. The research design selected was pre- experimental one group pretest posttest design. The study was conducted in Mehsana city. 60 samples are selected by nonprobability consecutive sampling technique. Data collection done after obtaining permission from authority. Self-structured questionnaire for knowledge score were used to collect data regarding management of postoperative management of abdominal surgeries; prepared tool was validated by different experts.
The pretest knowledge scores respondents mean was 9.96, median was 9, mode was 9 with standard deviation 3.65 and score range was 4-18. The posttest knowledge scores respondents mean was 13.86, median was 14, mode was 13 with standard deviation 2.77 and score range was 8-19. The statistical paired ‘t’ implies that the difference in the pretest and post-test value was found statistically significant at 5% level (P<0.05) with a paired ‘t’ value of 15.59. the computed Chi- square value for association between level of knowledge of relatives of patient’s regarding postoperative management and their selected demographic variables is found to be statistically significant at 0.05 levels for area of residence and is not found statistically significant for other socio demographic variables. Therefore, the findings partially support the hypothesis H2, inferring that relatives of patient’s level of knowledge regarding postoperative management is significantly associated only with residential area.

MAJOR FINDINGS:
Finding from section 1 shows that, 31.66% relatives belonged to the age group of 36-45 years, 50% of the relatives belonged to male and 50% females, 60% relatives belonged to Hindu, 50% of the relatives had to primary education, 78% relatives belonged to rural area, 36.66% relatives had to 5001-10001rs income per month, 36% relatives was retired, 46.66% relatives belonged to joint family, 46.66% relatives are patents of patient who undergoing to abdominal surgery.
The main conclusion from this present study is that most of the relatives had poor knowledge regarding postoperative management of abdominal surgeries in pretest and had improved to get extent after intervention which was revealed in posttest. This shows the imperative need to understand the utilities of structured teaching programme in improvement of knowledge regarding postoperative management among relatives of patients undergoing abdominal surgeries.
